How do I use the Search?
There are many ways to use the Search function on deviantART and a variety of places you can search. Below is an indepth list of search paramenters you can use to refine your search. Parameters can be combined together to narrow down Search results, to find very specific results.
All SearchesWhether you're searching for deviations, groups or forum threads, there are several parameters that will make searching through deviantART quick and easy. Most parameters can be combined to narrow down Search results to find very specific results.
Simple Search: fish Returns results that have the word "fish" in the their title, description, or keywords for deviation search, name, group tagline, description, custom tag for group search, etc.
Searching for Multiple Terms: fish cat Returns results that have BOTH "fish" AND "cat" in their title, description or keywords for deviation search, name, group tagline, description, custom tag for group search, etc.
Searching for a Phrase: "kung fu" Returns Deviations that contain the phrase "kung fu" in their title, description or keywords for Deviation search and name, group tagline, description, custom tag for group search, etc.
Matching Multiple Terms: fish OR cat Returns results that have EITHER "fish" OR* "cat" - but with an emphasis towards Deviations that contain both
*Please note that OR must be capitalized in order to be considered a parameter
Using Parentheses: dog (fish OR cat) Returns results that have "dog", plus EITHER "cat" OR "fish".
Excluding Search Terms: cat -fish Returns results that have "cat" but not "fish".
cat -fish -dog Returns results that have "cat" but do not have "fish" and do not have "dog" either.
Specific to Deviation Search
Below is a listing of the various Search parameters that are only available for searching deviations.
Searching by Title: title:cat Returns Deviations that have "cat" in their title.
Searching by Description: description:cat Returns Deviations that have "cat" in their description.
Searching by Keyword: keywords:cat Returns Deviations that have "cat" as a keyword.
Category Searching: in:photography Returns Deviations from the Photography category and its subcategories
fish in:photography Returns Deviations from the Photography category and its subcategories, that have "fish" in their title, description or keywords
in:photography/architecture Returns Deviations from the Architecture subcategory in Photography
fish in:photography/architecture Returns Deviations from the Architecture subcategory in Photography that have "fish" in their title, description or keywords
Searching Multiple Categories: fish (in:photography OR in:digitalart) Returns Deviations from either the Photography or the DigitalArt categories, or their subcategories, that have "fish" in their title, description or keywords
Excluding Categories in Searching: fish -in:photography Returns Deviations that have "fish" in their title, description or keywords, but aren't in the photography category or any of its subcategories
Searching by image resolution: width:1024 Returns Deviations that have an image whose width is 1024 pixels.
height:768 Returns Deviations that have an image whose height is 768 pixels.
1024x768 Returns Deviations that have an image of that size. Equivalent to width:1024 height:768
Searching by Deviant: by:spyed Returns Deviations that have been submitted by +spyed
fish by:spyed Returns Deviations that have been submitted by +spyed and have "fish" in their title, description or keywords
Searching a Deviant's Favourites: favby:spyed Returns all deviations that have been favourited by +spyed's
Please be advised this is a stand alone search term and cannot be combined.
Searching by Upload Time: max_age:24h Returns Deviations that have been submitted in the last 24 hours.
Similarly, search results can be limited to deviations submitted in the past few years, weeks, etc. by replacing the 'h' with one of the following. 'y' = Years 'w' = Weeks 'd' = Days 'h' = Hours 'm' = Minutes 's' = Seconds
Sorting Search Results by Upload Time QUERY sort:time Sort the results by upload time, from newest to oldest.
Please be advised this is not valid search query by itself and has to be combined with valid queries.
Searching for Deviations Available for Prints/Gifts attribute:print Returns Deviations that are available for prints/gifts.
Specific to Group Search
Below is a listing of the various Search parameters that are only available for searching groups.
Searching by Name: name:cat Returns groups that have the word "cat" in their name. It will only return groups if it's clear that "cat" is a word in its name, e.g. "CatFish", "Cat-Fish", but not "Catfish".
Searching by Tagline: tagline:cat Returns groups whose taglines contain the word "cat"
Searching by Description: description:cat Returns groups whose descriptions contain the word "cat"
Searching by Tag: customtag:cat Returns groups whose custom tags contain the word "cat"
Specific to Forum Search
Below is a listing of the various Search parameters that are only available for searching forum threads.
Searching by Subject: subject:cat Returns threads that have the word "cat" in the subject.
Searching by Body body:cat Returns threads whose original post contain the word "cat".
Searching by Deviant by:spyed Returns threads started by +spyed.
Searching for open/closed threads status:open Returns threads that have not been closed.
status:closed Returns threads that have been closed.
