What is news and what is not news?
News can be defined as “the presentation of a report on recent or new events in a newspaper or other periodical or on radio or television.” or in our case substitute radio and TV for internet, or we can boldly go one step further and discuss what exactly news is on deviantART.
Or more accurately what types of things should you be posting as news here on DA. I think the easiest way to define this is to keep the term informational in mind.
Is what you are posting informational and of value to the community at large?
Is it something that will interest a good cross section of the community?
Or is it something better suited to a journal since it is about you personally?
Let’s take those two concepts and check them out a bit. Some examples of things informative to the community here at deviantART would be news relating to the art world. Something new emerging by way of technology that could possibly affect people on the site. A large event being organized, like a devMeet. Something that you feel would be beneficial for all to know about aside from the people on your watch list who could read about it in your journal.
And there we have our next subject. Journals as opposed to news. A general rule of thumb for whether or not something should go in your journal instead of news would be “Is it about you?”, as in, is it about you uploading some new work, you got into college, you found 5 bucks on the road etc. If it pertains to you personally or a club you have or anything like that it is not really news, no matter how cool finding that 5 bucks was.
And that really is what it all boils down to. Does it pertain to a larger audience or is it better suited to the people who watch your journals and art?
